Volunteering in the Center means making a meaningful difference in the lives of the vulnerable and learning from them. Our team of volunteers contributes to the superlative service that we provide to the community.
We offer a variety of opportunities. With a number of volunteer programs to choose from, there is truly something for everyone. The Center Director and Volunteer Coordinator will help match your interests with the needs of The CAITHS.

You can be part of our volunteers by participating in the any of the following Programs
1. Teaching at KMMA:
Are you great with kids and youths?, and do you have a big heart for the vulnerable? As a volunteer you will become like a big sister/brother to kids at the Center. You will work alongside our staff under supervision of the Center director and Volunteer coordinator to help with classroom teaching and homework help, childcare, and the daily operational running of the Center. Volunteers are also encouraged to initiate their own talent related work by organizing arts and crafts, music, dance, games, sports activities, and day trips for the children.
This role is suitable for a caring, motivated, and self-directed person who has a love for children and ideally has childcare experience.
2. Community Health Volunteer at HIV Care and Services:
The CAITHS has opportunity and needs you to volunteer in our HIV/AIDS program. Kenya has been hit hard by the HIV/AIDS epidemic with approximately 1.25 million adults and over 100,000 children infected. The aim of the HIV Care and Awareness program is to decrease the spread of HIV through raising awareness and education, but to also increase access to home based care, and to provide emotional support to those families affected by HIV/AIDS within Rusinga Island. Volunteers have the opportunity to work Okoa Maisha Center to assist with homecare visits to HIV positive people, and educate and counsel the community and school groups and individuals. This role is suitable for a caring, motivated, and self-directed person. Medical training is not necessary for all aspects of the program, but a background in HIV/AIDS and basic health care is required. Here, you can volunteer your services as a facilitator, educator or an advocate in: Healthcare Management and prevention practices; Sanitation and Hygiene awareness campaign; Trainings and capacity building
We offer volunteering opportunities in the following age categories:
a. For Adult Volunteers: There are many opportunities for adult volunteers (aged 18yrs and above). Volunteers are needed to donate 8hrs in a day. The Volunteer Coordinator will help you match your interests with our current openings
b. For Undergraduate Student Volunteers: Undergraduate students may apply to volunteer at the end of the academic year or during their vacation period.
c. For Junior Volunteers: The Junior Volunteer Program offers high school youths ages 14-18 an opportunity to volunteer in a variety of areas through out the Center. Junior Volunteers provide valuable services to the community, families and staff, while gaining experience and self-confidence for themselves. There is also both cultural and academic exchange programs in the Center that you will get opportunity to interact with the community. This popular program is great way for teens to spend the summer.
d. For Summer Volunteers: Our Summer Volunteer Program is an intensive program for adults during the summer months of May to August. Your volunteering start and stop dates will be arranged individually through the Direcotor.
ARRIVAL, ORIENTATION AND ACCOMMODATION
Volunteer Arrival: For international volunteers, you are expected to fly to either Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya or Mombasa. From there, you are expected to make a phone call to the Director who will direct and arrange for your pick up.
Volunteer Orientation: Upon arrival in Kenya, you will be received by the Director or the Coordinator. This will be followed by a comprehensive one day orientation, which will include an introduction to the local area, information about your role at the Center, a health and safety briefing. This will be a great chance to also have a lot of fun and get to know your fellow volunteers.
Volunteer Accommodation and meals: The accommodation will depend on your preference, but always consists of very comfortable home-stay and guest houses. Three meals is provided in a day.
