ABOUT CAITHS
The Centre for Advocacy and Intervention on Talent, Healthcare and Sanitation- Okoa Maisha Centre was created as a Youth Group in 2013 by the community for the community of Rusinga Island. The CAITHS is a brainchild of Samwel O. Odhiambo who felt to give back and do something different to the community in a unique way, with main objectives being: providing both physical and socioeconomic protection to the vulnerable children and young women (widows); provision of a better and affordable education and talent growth to this vulnerable population; providing better healthcare/sanitation services to the community living with this vulnerable group; and providing a healthy and sustainable empowerment opportunities that promote environment conservation. The Group started with only five registered members, namely; Mr. Samwel Odhiambo, Mr. Tom Ateto, Mrs.Sarah Okeyo, Mr. Evance Ouma and Mrs. Margret Anyango. The number of registered members rose to 20 within a months. Other CAITHS members include; Beatrice Adoyo, Tobias Owuor, Fred Anyango, Everlyne Onyango, Roselyne Phillips, Charles Ocholla, Mathew Odhiambo, George Oyolo, Beatrice Owuor, Molenta Tobias, Daniel Onyango, Janet Gilumba, George Kingoma and Mercy Otieno.
During that time, we were operating from under a tree at Luore Shoping Centre which acted as our meeting place and mobile office, and had stones as chairs. After few months, the Centre got a temporary (mabati) structure which was donated by one of the community members.
In 2014, the CAITHS was registered as a Community Based Organization with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Development in accordance to Act of Parliament. During the same year, Samuel met and shared this great idea with his longtime friend Dr. Kieran McNulty, who advised and immediately visited the Group. He (Dr. Kieran) gave his first donation to the Group which enable us buy some chairs and working tools. A year later, Samuel met another friend Kelly Makino through her brother, Bill Lukens. Kelly gave some support in form of donation which enable us rent a much bigger office, buy more tools and facilitate our field activities. Since then, Dr. Kieran and his Field Research Team have been instrumental in giving many kinds of support to the Centre.
